Documents You Need When Selling Your Car in the UK

3 min read

Having the right documents ready when selling your car makes the process smoother and faster. It also gives buyers confidence, which can help you achieve a better price. Here’s everything you need to know about the paperwork involved in selling a car.

Essential Documents

V5C Registration Certificate (Logbook)

The V5C is the most important document when selling a car. It shows who the registered keeper is (not necessarily the legal owner) and contains vital information about the vehicle.

Key points:

  • The V5C should be in your name before selling
  • You’ll need to complete the “sell, transfer or part-exchange your vehicle” section
  • The buyer keeps the green “new keeper” slip
  • You must also notify the DVLA online or by post

Lost your V5C? You can apply for a replacement from the DVLA. It costs £25 and takes about 5 working days.

MOT Certificate

While the physical certificate isn’t legally required (MOT history is available online), having it ready demonstrates transparency. A long MOT is a selling point – buyers prefer cars that won’t need testing soon.

Service History

A full service history significantly increases your car’s value. Gather:

  • Service book with stamps
  • Invoices and receipts for work done
  • Records of any repairs or replacements

Helpful Additional Documents

Owner’s Manual

Having the original owner’s manual adds value and shows the car comes with everything it should. It’s also useful for the new owner.

Warranty Documents

If your car has any remaining warranty, have the documentation ready. Transferable warranties are attractive to buyers.

HPI Check Certificate

While not essential, a recent HPI or equivalent check shows there’s no outstanding finance, the car isn’t stolen, and hasn’t been written off. This provides peace of mind for buyers.

What You’ll Need for Identification

Most buyers and all professional car buying services will need to verify your identity:

  • Valid driving licence or passport
  • Proof of address (utility bill, bank statement) if different from the V5C

After the Sale

Once sold, you should:

  1. Notify the DVLA of the sale (online or via V5C)
  2. Cancel or transfer your car insurance
  3. Claim any unused road tax (automatic if notified correctly)
  4. Keep copies of all sale documents
